In celebration of the ‘National Zero Waste Month Awareness’, guests and employees of Hijo Resorts Davao gathered at Banana Beach last Jauary 26, for a pep talk on living towards ‘Zero Waste’, followed by a beach clean up and a brand audit among the trash collected.
Our resident Marine Biologist and head of our Marine Protection Program “The Trinity Project”, Harry Morris and Enviromental Safety Officer, Joselito Chavez atalked about the 5 R’s of Zero Waste:
- Refuse
- Reduce,
- Re-use,
- Recycle ,
- Rot the rest!
A “Brand Audit” according to storyofstuff.org, is a method done by the clean up participants, where they audit the product and materials that are ending up in the environment. Morris said, by doing an audit among the trash collected, the data would help hold the companies accountable for their waste.
All year round, Hijo maintains its Zero Waste Management. One of the best practices we implement in our resorts and the whole estates is the segregation and proper waste disposal. All the segregated wastes from the resort are gathered and brought to HRC’s CENTRALIZED MATERIAL RECOVERY FACILITY for recycling and junk selling. Our kitchen wastes are processed for Heap Composting to be used as fertilizer for our Malahutayon Organic Farm; where our resorts gets our fresh produce to serve to our guests.

“… as mandated by Presidential Proclamation no 760, dated May 5, 2014. Zero waste is defined as an advocacy that promotes the designing and managing of products and processes to avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials. It is also defined as a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary to guide people in having a resourceful lifestyle, in which discarded materials can be re-designed as resources for others to use. Zero Waste Month is also pursuant to Republic Act (RA) 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.” (cited from: http://nswmc.emb.gov.ph/?p=1065)
